Underalls - A 1978 retrospective
(to be sung to the tune of Wonderwall by Oasis)
‘78 was gonna be the year
And it all comes back to me
By now I should've somehow
Figured out who I should’ve been
I wanna know there’s somebody that
Feels the way I do, about that now
Odd beat, disco in the street
And the fire only came from KISS
I'm sure you've heard it all before
And it’s a time that you don’t miss
I wanna know there’s somebody that
Feels the way I do, about that now
And all the time we spent record/rewinding
And writing down the words and memorizing
The things I wanted were a boyfriend
and to be Weird Al but I didn’t know how
‘cause maybe, 2012 can be the year that saves me
And after all, they wore Underalls
‘78 was gonna be the year
And it all comes back to me
By now I should've somehow
Figured out who I should’ve been
I wanna know there’s somebody that
Feels the way I do, about that now

P.S.
If there is anyone out there who doesn’t remember 1978 or the Underalls
that I do, here’s a good link. This isn’t the exact same commercial
for Underalls that I remember. This one ends with “because they make her
look like I wish I looked.” Classic self-deprecating Pam Dawber. The
one I remember ended with a slinky bombshell whispering, “because they
make me look like I’m not wearing anything.” Or maybe it was “not
wearing nuthin’!” That would’ve been a double negative, but somehow I
remember it that way.

LMAO! I had to google Underalls, but HI-freaking-larious!!
ReplyDeletePam went on to tremendous fame, while the "slinky bombshell" (5"7', 120 by my guess) remained anonymous. I don't believe I ever saw the blonde in so much as another commercial.
ReplyDeleteI loved that "slinky bombshell" as well and FINALLY found that commercial here: http://www.historicfilms.com/tapes/9476_1855.87_1890.87
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see someone shares my taste in women. The original Underalls commercial is my all-time favorite. The ad currently available via Historic Films is a slight modification of the monologue, using the original video. I like the fact that the production slate titles the commercial as "walking girl priceless".
